Why official institutions hold gold, how reported activity should be read, and the limits of drawing conclusions from reserve data.

Why the official sector holds gold

Gold carries no issuer and no counterparty obligation, which is the property that distinguishes it from other reserve assets. Institutions cite diversification, long-horizon value retention and independence from any single currency system.

Reading reported activity

Reserve changes are reported with a lag, are revised, and are not always disclosed on a comparable basis. Short-run movements are weak evidence of a trend, and inferring intent from a single reporting period is generally unreliable.
